4/23 - INTO THE WEST (1992)

Grandpa finds a horse and gives it to his grandchildren. When their dad falls on hard times, they must veer from their Roma life and move into a tenement apartment in Dublin. After the horse is stolen outside of their apartment, the two young lads set out to find it and then flee with it "into the west" where, according to Hollywood movies, that's where happy futures lie. "Into the West" stars Gabriel Byrne & Ellen Barkin.

4/30 - AFTER LIFE (1998) - Japan (subtitled)

In this highly acclaimed film, Director Hirokazu Koreeda tells the story of a group of people who have recently died and find themselves in a limbo realm resembling a relatively mundane building. Counselors are on hand to help new arrivals pick one memory from their lives to take with them into eternity. Once the memories are chosen, the staff make a short film representing each one, with the films making up a collage of some of the most thoughtful cinematic moments in film history.

5/7 - TRULY MADLY DEEPLY (1990)

A woman dealing with inconsolable grief over the loss of her partner gets another chance when he returns to earth as a ghost. Thanks in large part to stars Juliet Stevenson & Alan Rickman, director Anthony Minghella's "TRULY MADLY DEEPLY" is a romance with infectious spirit.

Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece starring Max Von Sydow is set during the Black Plague. The film tells the story of a knight returning to Sweden from the Crusades seeking answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper.

5/21 - THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR (1947)

Set around 1900, a young widow defies convention when she and her young daughter take off to a secluded seaside cottage—a cottage which happens to be the abode of one ghostly sea captain. A woman alone, with very little money and the responsibility of a daughter must find her way in dealing with the fractious spirit while finding her way in life. Starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, and directed by Joseph Mankiewicz, the U.K. Times called it "a film that effortlessly switches between gentle romantic comedy and pathos, melodrama, and fantasy. It’s a beguiling charmer."

How can you miss this show?! From the wild, wooly and weird Pacific Northwest, drummer/guitarist/singer Mark Pickerel has quite the back story. Before becoming a leading voice in the PNW's alt-country, blues and Americana music scenes, he was the drummer in seminal grunge faves The Screaming Trees, has played on albums by Mark Lanegan, Brandi Carlile, and Nirvana, toured with Neko Case and contributed to her track on the "Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson compilation."

Mark's got the goods, though. He was born to be in front. With his rakish good looks and his tendency to spend more than $3 on haircuts, he has already endeared himself to the ladies of the office. His voice—alluring and just a little bit sinister—evinces his influences ranging from Leonard Cohen, Lee Hazlewood and the Gun Club, to the Stranglers and Nick Cave.

ARTS EDUCATION FEATURED VIDEO

Vicky Edmonds from New Canoe Media on Vimeo.

“My favorite part was all of it. She was so good, I didn’t want her to go.“

- Zoey (3rd Grade), Wilkes Elementary Classroom Teacher, describing Resident Teaching Artist Vicky Edmonds

“Something new to me was learning I can move my body like a sea creature.”

- Cypress (2nd Grade), Wilkes Elementary Classroom Teacher, describing Resident Teaching Artist Karen Harp-Reed

“We connect the mosaic tiling to geometry (area, perimeter, and spatial reasoning). One of the greatest parts of this is seeing the kids who are typically more “right brained” shine and lead the class. This taps into areas of the brain that a majority of the kids are not used to using. Starting with a smaller tile and then using the larger one is a great way to scaffold the activity.”

– Erin Graham, Susan Knottnerus, Ordway 3rd grade Classroom Teachers, describing Resident Teaching Artist Tim Lowell

“…because it allows ALL students to have an opportunity to explore dance, as some of our students might not get that chance otherwise…they learned that they can express themselves and their creativity in many different ways… so important to their overall development and appreciation of their capabilities.”

– Megan Berg Blakely Elementary Kindergarten Classroom Teacher, describing Resident Teaching Artist Gary Reed
