The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum could not fulfill its mission of preserving and fostering knowledge of Bainbridge Island history without help of our wonderful volunteers. Volunteering at the Museum is challenging, rewarding, and fun. Some of the benefits are:

  • Supporting the educational and community service goals of the Historical Museum
  • Learning more about Bainbridge Island history through our collection and research library
  • Receiving specialized museum training
  • Invitations to volunteer events
  • Utilizing your skills and learning new ones
  • Meeting interesting people and making new friends
  • Free access to the Museum’s research library
  • Flexible work schedules in a variety of volunteer opportunities
  • Students can earn community service credits

We offer many opportunities for volunteers of all ages. Here are just a few examples:

  • Docent – Welcome guests from all over the world, guide them through the museum, and interpret the exhibits.
  • Teacher Docent – We need educators who can develop curricula and deliver programs based around Bainbridge Island history, and people who enjoy guiding groups of learners of all ages.
  • Tour Guide – If you have in-depth historical knowledge of an Island locale or subject, BIHM will help you create a guided tour.
  • Gardener – help to beautify the Museum’s grounds and maintain the outdoor exhibits.
  • Library – Catalog the museum’s large and varied collection of books and other printed materials, and assist Museum staff and members of the public in research activities.
  • Events/Administrative – Assist in the day-to-day operation of the Museum such as data entry, special projects, gift shop, facilities maintenance, and offsite events.
  • Curatorial – Assist the curator in connection with processing items into the collections, exhibit development and installation, and other curatorial tasks.
