Guard Towers to Twin Towers: The Cats of Mirikitani, and Enemy Alien – smARTfilms: Executive Order 9066 at Eighty

THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI (2006) 1H14M
Documentary about Jimmy Mirikitani, a feisty painter working and living on the street, near the World Trade Center, when 9/11 devastates the neighborhood. A nearby film editor, Linda Hattendorf, persuades elderly Jimmy to move in with her, while seeking a permanent home for him. The young woman delves into the California-born, Japan-raised artist’s unique life which developed his resilient personality, and fuels his two main subjects: cats and internment camps.
ENEMY ALIEN (2011) 1H10M
A Japanese American filmmaker finds echoes of his own family’s World War II internment in post-9/11 arrests of Muslim immigrants and joins the struggle to free Farouk Abdel-Muhti, a Palestinian activist. Farouk organizes resistance among his fellow detainees, incurring abusive retaliation from his captors, as Homeland Security officials investigate the documentary itself, arresting Farouk’s son.
