BARNTalks: The Big Bang and Sub-Atomic Collisions (Free Event)

Presented by Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) at Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN)

Join us at BARN each month for an evening of inspiring ideas!  BARN Talks are bringing the community together for presentations and discussion on topics that highlight the challenges, decisions, failures, and successes in life and craft.

Our February event is a fascinating talk about the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, a European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.  Bjorn Nielsen will present a number of stories about working at CERN.  He will share many of the peculiarities about the people and the place, and a bit about the physics done there including some live - or nearly live - results. Bjorn will touch on issues in designing, engineering, and CERN's support of the arts.

Please register and bring a guest! During registration please indicate in the box provided if you will be bringing a guest.
The event is free but we will be welcoming a suggested donation of $5 per person at the door.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Our speaker:

Bjorn Nilsen has a B.S. in Physics from California State University, M.S. From Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  His research has been in High Energy Nuclear Physics at the heaviest and highest energies available at the time. Most of his work has been in computer simulations of detector response and events.

He worked on a number of experiments including CERN ISR R110 CCMOR collaboration, NASA's HEAO III's HNE calibration at LBNL, NFS's cosmic ray experiment JACEE, CERN KLMM emulsion experiment, and the ALICE CERN experiment. Most recently he has been teaching at Peninsula College, and is starting a new business to produce physics demonstration and student laboratory equipment.

If you are interested in being a speaker in the future, please contact BARN Program Manager Jess Henderson at jessh@bainbridgebarn.org.
