Artist statement:

“Art is the connection between the artist’s intention and what the audience sees and feels.  Because I have worked in schools for over 20 years teaching mosaic, I prefer to make my content clear for public consumption. I want the connection to be there, and I use my skills in mosaic technique and sculptural form to make this happen. In the proposed Lucky Dog mosaic for the Bainbridge Island Something New V call, I have created a smiling, chocolate lab ready for petting and photographs.

This dog’s happiness is sure to grab the viewer’s attention. But the idea goes further than that. The name Lucky refers to the concept of Gratitude that we all know and appreciate. Lucky is asking us to reflect on what we have and appreciate every bit of it. Lucky has a big bone at his feet, and a short fence that isn’t really keeping him in; so he has a lot of freedom. Lucky wants each person to feel that same sense of being Lucky.” – Mark Brody
