A friend and former board colleague in Japan, Craig Saphin, recently launched the book “Scaling New Heights” to help small and midsize businesses overcome stagnation and restart growth. In his April blog post, he highlights a piece from McKinsey entitled, “Beyond coronavirus: The path to the next normal.” (March 2020). It offers a set of stages comprised of five “R’s” – Resolve, Resilience, Return, Reimagination and Reform – to help businesses navigate the COVID-19 crisis and determine suitable priorities and focal points.

Although the McKinsey piece focuses on higher-level government and country infrastructure issues, the five R’s are also useful for nonprofit organizations such as Arts & Humanities Bainbridge (AHB).

As the pandemic shifted from China to the West Coast, our organization, along with many other nonprofits, had to rapidly take stock and shift priorities to support the community. In keeping with our mission, “to connect you to the abundance of creativity in our community, to empower and inspire,”  AHB was able to resolve its efforts, and the agility of our talented staff and committed board members accounts for our resilience. The launch of Currents Online one year ago provided us with the infrastructure to connect the community to information, resources and updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luckily, we live in a community that has been working toward a neighborhood response to disasters, thanks to the work of Scott James over several years. The extraordinary efforts of the Emergency Operations Center led by Anne LeSage and the coordination between the Bainbridge Prepares team and local nonprofits such as Helpline House, Island Volunteer Caregivers, BARN and many others is truly remarkable. The years of work invested in the Map Your Neighborhood program have helped ameliorate a sense of panic, as many of us have considered disaster preparation and the need to look out for one another.

Stay tuned for some wonderful programs that will be rolled out shortly to respond to the needs of this wonderful community.
