Spring

I wanted to share this first journal with you in a time that seems to stand still and speed up in a moments notice. I’ve been meaning to write this for a few YEARS now and because I have the energy, time and space, today is when its emerging!

Everyone is having a different experience during this pandemic. Mine is more luminous and promising, even in uncertainty, one of gratitude and appreciation for my kids, parents, creativity and nature. Growing up in Alaska, being around nature has helped me understand the idea of being part of the bigger picture the best. It is always where I find inspiration for my paintings as well as developing a sensitivity and space for awareness.

I have been a long time student of yoga, in the last couple of years practicing Kundalini and Katona yoga. Knowing we are connected to the universe and her powerful and loving energy, we are offered a sense of protection, like being wrapped in velvety wings.

I am my most true self in slowness and solitude, coming out into the world once in awhile to share and gather…

I am my most true self in slowness and solitude, coming out into the world once in awhile to share and gather… and worked hard before the social distancing to keep things or people out of my life that weren’t authentic or offer a sense of beauty and poetry in some way, big or small. With three kids, this isn’t always easy. Anyone with children understands what schedules mean and how that asks the parent to always be “on” in a superhero kind of way.

My teenagers out of their normal school and after school schedule are now cooking many of the family meals, learning construction with grampa, learning about plants and herbs in the new vegetable gardens, laughing more, seeing me laugh more often and spending more time in nature.
So even though it may seem we have less, we actually have more of the very things that really matter in life.

Early Spring started off with an art opening at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts. It was just as we were getting information about COVID-19…it was strange and not too much of a celebration. Even so, my dad, kids and friends came to see and support.

After having a small following in Southern California and exhibiting at SCAPE Gallery for many years, this was only my second gallery show here in the pacific northwest even though this will be our 5th year of living back on the island!

My first exhibit was at Perry and Carlson Gallery in the skagit valley. A wonderful contemporary gallery with a beautiful shop filled with treasures connected to the gallery.

After some big life changes I am slowly becoming part of our art community here on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

This artistic life is full of the many things I treasure…my children, cooking, the garden, painting…it is all connected, and so are we.

We can find beauty and miracles every day if we look.

A promising May Day today,
(We are making a Ukranian poppy seed cake and more flower crowns!)

Sending love,

Danis
