Bainbridge Arts & Crafts and Arts & Humanities Bainbridge are delighted to announce the winner of the 2021 Amy Award for Emerging Artists; photographer, writer, and book artist Maddie K. Rogers.

The Amy Award has been given annually since 2001 to an emerging artist from Bainbridge Island, under the age of 35, whose work demonstrates “a sense of quality, creativity, exploration, and dedication.” Managed by the Arts & Humanities Bainbridge, the award is funded by an endowment established by David and Caren Anderson in memory of their late daughter, Amy, who was deeply involved in the visual and performing arts. Bainbridge Arts & Crafts and Bainbridge Performing Arts select recipients in alternating years.

Maddie’s photographs have an intensely personal quality. They exude a quiet resilience,  revealing courageousness in the ways they show personal moments, unraveling privacy within personal and public spaces.

Maddie grew up on Bainbridge Island, WA. She studied photography at Columbia College and earned her BFA in photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019. Before COVID, Maddie and several co-founders created The Litterbox, a DIY arts and performance venue, hosting  bands, poets, and visual artists. Maddie also started a vintage clothing business called Primaries Vintage (@primariesvintage on Instagram.) While not specifically arts related, she sees it as part of her artistic practice. She has already accumulated numerous awards for her photographs and it is our honor to present the 2021 Amy Award to a young artist with such a clear voice and vision as expressed through her work.
