I do not usually call attention to a gallery’s exhibition two months in a row. However, I decided to make an exception with the July exhibition of the photography of Islander Pete Saloutos at The Roby King Gallery. Up front I will tell you the main reason for this is that proceeds from the sale of Saloutos’ artwork will go to help the refugees of Ukraine. That said, Saloutos’ images are amazing and now is a great time to see some of his work again, works from a 57-year career as a professional photographer and a long-time resident of Bainbridge Island. He shares the exhibition space with the mixed media artwork of a new gallery artist, Dee Dee Lantzy. Be sure to come see the artwork of both artists!

Throughout his career Saloutos has covered imagery of many sports, but some of his water sports are especially poetic, capturing water’s splashes, bubbles and flourishes in interplay with human forms. Other sports covered in his career include dance, football, track and field, weight  and cycling to name a few. His different concentrated portfolios include portraits, architecture and cityscapes, conceptual kaleidoscopes, night images, travel (such as Paris and Iceland in particular) among others. His works are quite positive and uplifting and are chosen by those “stock photos” organizations, companies, and governments to sell things, to help portray what their concept of the possible is. For his ability to capture such imagery, he has been called a Nikon Legend. He has over 3500 images on file at Getty Images in a number of other such image banks.

This exhibition comes on the heels of his inclusion in the Crocker Art Museum’s exhibition of Twinka Theibaud and the Art of the Pose. (Sacramento, CA)  The exhibition about her is running alongside an exhibition of her renowned father Wayne Theibaud. Twinka Theibaud’s long career as an artist’s model is considered very influential. At least one photograph of her is included in the Roby King exhibition.

A long-time resident of Bainbridge Island, Saloutos has donated his skills and artwork to help situations and organizations since at least the early 1990s. Partnering with The Roby King Gallery in the early 1990, for instance, sales proceeds were given to a “Save Gazzam Lake” effort and an American Red Cross need. Saloutos was a co-founder of the charitable organization “Arms Around Bainbridge.” Created to call attention to, and raise funds for, people with life-threatening health issues where the cost exceeded insurance coverage. Since 1977, he has been curating  images for a calendar, and by the 90’s his focus turned towards using their sales for charitable fundraising. Around 2016, his own wife Aleta was challenged with cancer. She was able to be treated in Seattle and reach the “in remission” stage, and for this, Saloutos switched his fundraising calendar to benefit the “Seattle Cancer Care Alliance” out of gratitude for saving Aleta’s life.

And so now, Saloutos is offering his artwork again to benefit a current need. Sale proceeds of his work from this show will be donated to The World Central Kitchen’s efforts in Ukraine. Under direction of the renowned chef Jose Andrés, who founded the Kitchen in 2010, Andrés is working to provide hot meals, grocery packs, shelf-stable packs, etc., for Ukrainian refugees along the Ukraine-Poland border. In addition to the First Friday Opening on July 1st, there will be a special Reception at the Roby King Gallery on Saturday, July 9, from 6 to 8 PM.
