Cash prizes will be awarded to four Bainbridge High School visual art students, by the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour as part of their annual Youth Art Award. The award was open to Bainbridge students and residents who are High School juniors and seniors. This was the 9th year for the award, which is funded by last year’s Studio Tour artists who (optionally) donate a portion of their sales. Dinah Satterwhite is the Tour Manager and is excited about the program that reaches out to support our young art community. Each student who entered was required to submit five photos of their work and complete an application form and detailed Artist’s Statement.

The Grand Prize will go to Calder Lange, a senior, for his very creative photography. One of his images that really caught the judges’ attention was a striking combination of photos stacked over each other to create a single image. Calder says, “the photo with the star trails is over 140 long exposure images from about an hour and a half of shooting that I stacked on top of one another in order to create the moving effect of the stars and the planes flying through the sky.”

Three honorable mentions will be awarded: Josephine Joslyn, a senior, for her digital art and complex pen-and-ink drawings with unique messages; MinWoo Cho, a senior, for her very imaginative pencil and micron pen drawings; and Eleanor Ford, a senior, for her acrylic and mixed media work. Eleanor shared: “I wanted to portray scenes in which decay was not bad or an ending, but instead a driving force of transformation.”

This years’ awards were decided by three judges, each a seasoned artist in the area and Studio Tour Board member. Dinah shared that “the numbers were very close when voting, and we were thrilled to see such beautiful art and such a variety of mediums. Two honorable mention winners tied for the award, out to the hundredth place in the judges scoring.”

Cash prizes and merit certificates will be awarded at BHS on May 18, at 6pm, during the Spring Arts Festival. A large display of art from a variety of mediums will be on display, and other awards presented as well.

The Tour will continue with the Youth Art Award, and is currently preparing for the upcoming Summer Studio Tour, scheduled for August 11-13. Details: www.bistudiotour.com. For more information, contact Ms. Satterwhite at 206-842-0504.
