Bainbridge Island resident Sandy Haight, has been focusing on painting the inner landscape of plants and flowers, calling these works Floralscapes. They evolved during a transition from her career as an illustrator (www.sandyhaight.com) to discovering her own artistic vision. Her gardens and travels provide endless inspiration to explore with a camera, zooming in on those sparks of color that most attract attention in the landscape.

“Enlarging and composing the bloom from a photo to fill the picture plane, I take the viewer into an abstract and sensual world,“ explains Sandy. “I look for beautiful transitions of color or textures that could be expressed luminously with my many layers of glazed watercolor or provide an opportunity to try new painting techniques.” The shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plants are the subject that awakened her love of painting, giving her a chance to create images of stunning beauty while merging realism with an abstract sense of design.  Since the pandemic she’s experimenting with acrylic paints.

Showing her paintings in the Northwest Watercolor Society’s juried shows qualified her to become a signature member in 2012. The initials NWWS now follow her signature on the Floralscape paintings.

Sandy Haight was the poster artist for Bainbridge in Bloom’s 2015 Garden Tour and the 2016 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. She moved to Bainbridge Island in 2017 to a large new studio where she can create larger and larger Floralscape paintings.
