The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum (BIHM), in collaboration with Arts & Humanities Bainbridge (AHB) and the Bainbridge Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library (BPL) will be hosting a “Courage in Journalism” panel discussion on March 23 at 7 p.m.

The virtual panel, consisting of Mary Woodward, Becky Fox Marshall, and Steve Powell, and moderated by Linda Kramer Jenning will look at the undaunted role the Bainbridge Island Review has played in voicing the truth during challenging times.

The Bainbridge Review was at the forefront of speaking out against Japanese exclusion, expelling the attempted infiltration of white supremacy on the island, and in recent times, addressing issues related to Black Lives Matter and Critical Race Theory. The panel will look at this history and ask, is there still courage in journalism today?  Has it changed?  If so, how?

“This is a unique, Bainbridge Island story,” said Inez Maubane Jones, Executive Director of Arts & Humanities Bainbridge.  “Bainbridge Review is the epitome of our rich history.  Together with Bill Moskin, co-author of the seminal work on cultural tourism commissioned by the Clinton administration, we thought a panel discussion would be great.”

Through collaboration with BIHM’s Katy Curtis, BPL’s John Fosset and guidance from Judge Robin Hunt, the panel took shape.  Mary Woodward is the youngest daughter of Walt and Milly Woodward, owners of the Bainbridge Review during WWII that courageously editorialized against the exclusion of Japanese Americans.

Becky Fox Marshall was the editor of the Bainbridge Review when nationally known white supremacists tried to infiltrate the island.  By courageously putting ink to paper and inspiring her neighbors, this stain never penetrated this community.

Steve Powell is the current editor of the Bainbridge Island Review, North Kitsap Herald and Kingston Community News.  Boasting a 40-year career in journalism he has worked with mostly daily newspapers along the West Coast.

Linda Kramer Jenning is a veteran journalist who has taught at Georgetown University and worked for national magazines.  She is a regular contributor to PostAlley.org and is an AHB board member.

“ It’s so important to understand the history of how the Bainbridge community has fought against racism and bigotry time and again and the key role of journalism has played in this ongoing struggle,” said Jenning.

With this strong panel, we hope to illuminate what it takes to voice the truth in the face of anger, resistance, and fear.
