Arts in Education

Why is arts education important? Arts education helps students develop Studio Habits of Mind as well as 21st Century Skills. These qualities are vital parts of a complete K-12 education. Research and experience confirm that arts education helps students develop crucial skills like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, and that it supports learning in other core subjects. We also know that participation in the arts helps keep students in school. How does the Arts In Education Program work? The Program connects teachers and teaching artists and brings hands-on art experiences to island students. Relying on the information found in our Teaching Artist Roster, public school Classroom Teachers invite a Teaching Artist into the classroom to advance student learning through experiences in arts education. Teaching Artists are practicing artistic professionals with the skills and sensibilities of educators. Classroom Teachers collaborate with Teaching Artists to plan Residencies (see the step-by-step guide below). Following each Residency, we gather assessments from the Teaching Artist, the Classroom Teachers, and student participants. Finally, parents of student participants receive a letter of thanks from their child’s Teaching Artist and AHB. Teacher Resources: Lesson plans will be provided at least two weeks in advance of scheduled project. Sample Residency Topics: Lullaby Mean Jean - a play Tales from Outer Suburbia Tales from the Henhouse; The Chicken Chasing Queen of Lamar County The Arrival Sample Residency Description: Gaman - Stourwater Films Interviews and Footage by renown local filmmaker Lucy Ostrander On March 30th1942, the first Japanese families were taken from Bainbridge Island, WA and placed in internment camps. One member of the Nakata family shares his history without resentment. How did these families survive internally? As I look at the ghettos, a modern-day internment and think about the refugee crisis around the world, I think it important to explore our internal resources for overcoming adversity. Can people retain their dignity despite oppression or adversity through endurance and implementation of creative thought? We will explore this topic through rap, dance and drawing. EALR Focus: 1.1 Understands arts concepts and vocabulary, 1.2 Understands Principles of Organization, 2.1 Develops arts skills and techniques, 2.4 Applies audience skills in a variety of settings, 3.1 Applies a creative process in the arts.

Youth Programs at BARN

Opportunities for youth at BARN We hope youth and families find many opportunities to become active at BARN. The classes and programs listed in the Youth Calendar are either specifically designed for youth or have been “tagged” by studios because the event topic might be of interest to youth. All classes at BARN are open to 14 and above, unless noted otherwise. Middle School Maker Mondays: Middle Schoolers: come on over to BARN after school on early release days for our Maker Monday sessions! We’re kicking off the series this fall with a Sewing Lab, and stay tuned for our Kitchen skills class coming up soon! Teen Nights: High school students in grades 9 – 12 are invited to create and hang out at BARN on Teen Nights! Come enjoy free food and drink. Play games in the BARN Commons. Explore a Studio project and learn new skills. Bring friends. Meet new friends. Click here for more info. Girls Who Code club: BARN is hosting a FREE Girls Who Code club once again for the 2019-20 school year for girls in grades 6-12. The club will meet every Thursday afternoon (except school holidays) from September 26 through March 5th, from 3:45 – 5pm. Girls will be guided through a progression of computer & programming skills throughout the year! Click here to get more information or register for the club. More ways to get involved: In addition, we are developing other opportunities for youth to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, engage our artisan studios and learn from BARN Artisans. Internships: BARN is fueled by volunteers. Join the BARN team as a volunteer, and as a high school student, you could apply for an unpaid Work Experience Credit. Youth Council: High school and middle school students can help guide and direct BARN’s youth offerings. Community Service: Get involved in any of the community service projects at BARN. Independent Studies/Mentorships: If you are interested in Independent Studies through your local high school, contact your school counselor. Partnerships: We would love to chat with representatives of schools, youth and community groups on how to connect our programs with yours.
