Como, Italy where three generations of artisan Albertazzi women bring the Scanagatta designs to life in
wearable, joy-filled form, one handmade piece at a time.
Curt Labitzke (Seattle, Washington): Born in New York in 1958, Labitzke first apprenticed with his father
who was a graphic designer and painter and was inspired by his mother who was a quiltmaker and stained glass
artist. He received his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame. Curt is currently Chair of the
Printmaking and Interdisciplinary Visual Arts Programs at the University of Washington and regularly teaches
in the School of Art’s study abroad program in Rome and Florence, Italy.
The Seattle Art Museum describes Labitzke’s work as primarily influenced by his interest in using the portrait
and posture of the figure as a means of conveying an implied narrative. These large-scale images encourage a
wide variety of interpretations that often provoke empathy for the subject within the viewer. His work is
informed by an ongoing interest in art history, to include Roman portrait busts, Renaissance drawing, Neo-
classical painting and the world of contemporary photography.
