Author and Bloedel Reserve Creative Resident Tsering Lama in Conversation With Journalist Jenn Hemminsgen re Tserings New Novel

Join us at Eagle Harbor Book Co. for an unforgettable evening as we host a conversation between author and Bloedel Reserve Creative Resident, Tsering Lama, and journalist/writer Jenn Hemmingsen discussing Tsering’s acclaimed new novel We Measure the Earth With Our Bodies.

Breathtaking in scope and powerfully intimate, We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies is a gorgeously written meditation on colonization, displacement, and the lengths we’ll go to remain connected to our families and ancestral lands. Told through the lives of four people over fifty years, this beautifully lyrical debut novel provides a nuanced portrait of the world of Tibetan exiles.

The night will include a reading from the novel by Tsering and an insightful Q and A session with Tsering, where you’ll get a chance to delve into the inspirations and stories behind her writing. Following the discussion, we’ll host a reception where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase your own copy of her book, which Tsering will personally inscribe for you.

About Tsering and Jenn:

Tsering Langzom Lama holds an MFA in Writing from Columbia University and a BA in Creative Writing and International Relations from the University of British Columbia. She is a co-founder of LhakarDiaries, a leading English-language blog among Tibetan youth in exile. Her debut novel, We Measure the Earth With Our Bodies, won the GLCA New Writers Award as well as the Banff Mountain Book Award for Fiction & Poetry. Her novel also received nominations for The Giller Prize, Prix Émile Guimet, The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, The Carol Shields Prize, The Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writers Prize, The Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, The Jim Deva Prize for Writing that Provokes, The VCU Cabell First Novel Prize, and The Toronto Book Awards.

Jenn Hemmingsen is a journalist and nonfiction writer whose work has appeared in newspapers across the U.S. and abroad. After two decades as a criminal justice reporter, political commentator, and professional observer of various other calamities, she’s turned to the bright side. She now mostly writes about sustainable travel, social good leadership, corporate responsibility, and other good deeds. You may have seen her work locally in The Seattle Times, Tideland Magazine, and The Island Wanderer. Her day job is as Marketing Communications Coordinator for BARN, and yes, she’s still pinching herself over her good luck in landing such a fabulous job surrounded by such fabulous people on this fabulous island.
