Most folks know me as a photographer; I only started painting 7 years ago, when I realized what fun it could be to paint abstracts (Thank you, Christopher Mathie, for your inspiring demo at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts.)
A big part of the pleasure of this work is that I don’t usually know what I’m going to paint until I paint it. Sometimes the result is visually satisfying; more often it’s not – but that’s the joy of working with acrylics: I can just keep painting over what I’ve done until it evolves into something that pleases me.

A big part of the pleasure of this work is that I don’t usually know what I’m going to paint until I paint it. Sometimes the result is visually satisfying; more often it’s not – but that’s the joy of working with acrylics: I can just keep painting over what I’ve done until it evolves into something that pleases me.
Though some of my paintings are more realistic than others, I’ve noticed that no matter where I start on the canvas almost all of them seem to evolve either into clouds and rain or boats and water — probably not surprising, given that I’ve lived on various islands in the Pacific Northwest for the last 25 years or so.
I paint in a quiet studio, no music, usually in the morning, after I’ve meditated, so my work has a somewhat peaceful, soothing quality – which probably explains why so much of it seems to end up in hospitals. I like to think it reassures people that there’s still a space for peace in their lives; some light in the darkness that can seem almost overwhelming these days…
