Untold Stories explores the impact of mentorship and activism through the relationship between Dr. Gilda Shepherd and Kimonti Carter. Carter was incarcerated from the age of 18 to 43 under Washington’s three-strikes law. He was released in June, 2022, under sentencing review. During his time in incarceration, Carter founded TEACH (Taking Education and Creating History), a remarkably innovative prisoner education program. Dr. Gilda Shepherd partnered with Kimonti to produce the award winning documentary, Since I Been Down, which chronicles the work that Carter and other inmates did to provide education, mentorship, and opportunities both within and outside of prison walls. Dr. Shepherd and Mr. Carter will screen Since I Been Down at 5:00, with a follow-up presentation and discussion about mentorship at 7:00.
Since I Been Down will be available to stream online from Jan 16 to Jan 23.
