Sarah D. King

Visual Arts: Photography

Sarah is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersections of photography and movement. Her work centers around her continuous inquiry into the roles of embodiment and physicality in the creative process. She is fueled by the experiential aspects of making photographs & integrates her background as a dancer in order to focus on the physicality of this process. By working experimentally, emphasizing bodily intuition & improvisation, her work becomes a record of ephemeral experience & physical acts. Embedded in this process is the emergence and empowerment of the feminine self. The body becomes a source of identity & communication. She holds a Certificate in Fine Art Photography from the Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW), in Seattle, WA. Her work has been exhibited throughout Washington State, including PCNW’s Reverberations (2022), and the Certificate in Fine Art Photography Thesis Exhibition (2019). Her work was awarded second prize in the Collective Visions juried exhibition at Collective Visions Gallery in Bremerton, WA (2022). She's been a guest artist at Inscape Arts in Seattle & created work for the Shunpike Storefronts Program. She's on the faculty at PCNW & the Bainbridge Dance Center and served on Bainbridge Island's Public Art Committee. Visual Arts: Printmaking

Landscapes tug at MaryAnn's heart and pull on her soul. She has traveled through landscapes, settled into landscapes, designed landscapes, breathed in landscapes, tromped through landscapes and tried to analyze and understand them. Capturing their essences is a focus of her artwork. Author Jay Appleton, in The Experience of Landscape, theorizes that we are drawn to those qualities of landscape that were critical to human evolution. Prospect & refuge allowed us to ‘see’ and ‘not be seen’ affording opportunity, safety and the promise of food and shelter. As MaryAnn experiences the visual world she finds that those same qualities attract her attention and pull her in. As a child she was drawn to the scent and shelter of the neighbors pine grove and a perch above the river that flowed through our town. Neither of these places were spectacular scenes. The pines occupied a small side yard and the river was a lazy muddy brown. Still they offered refuge & prospect. As an adult she places a high value on living close to the incredible soothing greenness of northwest forests, never tire of the same hiking trails that wander through waves of bear grass and offer long vistas and find that standing on a beach feeling the power of ocean meeting land stirs the soul. As an artist she keeps returning to those scenes that, when broken down into their visual resources, can be understood as qualities of prospect and refuge. No matter the medium, those qualities must be present. And no matter the scene, the viewers comfort or discomfort may depend on the balance of those qualities.

Visual Arts: Media & Visual Communications, Painting

Every painting I do emerges from a meditative state. The process of making a painting allows me to leave the world behind and immerse myself in the moment of creation. My love of nature inspires my landscapes, and living on the coast – where the sea meets the land – lets me indulge my fascination with water. The technique of watercolor is well suited to my desire to bring forth a sense of well being and calmness through my work. I love the purity, spontaneity, and challenge of getting a painting right the first time, without extensive reworking or muddling. In my paintings, there are only a few elements – light, water, pigment – which then are animated and transformed by the white of the paper they are applied to. The color of white is a paradox. How can white be a color? The law of physics teach us that white light is composed of the visual spectrum of red, green and blue light waves. The white of the paper provides the ground – the solidity – of every painting, and at the same time, the foundation for the translucency that makes the medium so ephemeral. Another paradox. Through the white of the paper, the colors hidden in the everyday world emerge to wake up our eyes, so we can be delighted and amazed. Every painting I do is a step towards a deeper understanding, and appreciation, of the visual world.
