Aaron Francisco Castro

Aaron Francisco Castro

A second generation Californian of Mexican and Salvadoran heritage, Aaron Francisco Castro was born and raised in and around the colorful Mission District of San Francisco, and his work is deeply rooted in the street scenes, characters and culture that he found himself immersed in as a child and young adult there. His expressive, disembodied heads have become, over time, the central and iconic image of his salty and at times weirdly mystical artistic language. His work is a channel for strange souls from a slightly Gorey-esque underworld to make brief appearances on paper and express a range of emotions, opinions, musings and odd poetic truths about pop culture, relationships and the way it feels to exist within–or to pass fleetingly through–the artist’s mind.

Castro lives and works in his home studio on Bainbridge Island, alongside his wife, artist Erica Steiner, and their cat, Little.
